Van Hien ELT Contest 2021 - the Results of the Final Round (Debate)
The ELT has virtually taken place on the base of Microsoft Team at 8:00 on Saturday August 28th, 2021.
In the final round, 10 excellent contestants are divided into 5 pairs. Each pair will debate on a different topic, which has 2 perspectives for “For” and “Against”. Contestants are expected to demonstrate their creativity, quick reaction, and ability to persuade or refute a specific viewpoint.
In addition, they have to manage their time effectively because each pair has 1 minute to prepare and arrange their ideas, and 8 minutes to debate against each other (4 minutes for each ‘for’ team and 4 minutes for each ‘against’ team).
There are two main parts in this contest. To start, each participant will choose a picture which has a word ‘for’ or ‘against’ and a number (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5) behind it. By doing that, participants will randomly be assigned into 5 pairs. In the first part, 2 contestants in each pair take turn to debate each other. The maximum points from each judge are 100 points. Each contestant will receive points from 3 judges. 3 contestants with the highest points will enter the final part of the contest.

The results of the 5 debates in the first part are (1) Phạm Hồng Thái (VHU) ranking first with 267 points, (2) Nghiêm Vũ Ý Như (HIU) ranking second with 265, and (3) Nguyễn Võ Minh Tú ranking third with 264 points.
These 3 contestants enter the final part of the contest. In this part, each contestant takes turn to answer one question from one of the three judges. Generally, these questions put the contestants into a specific situation and they have to give their opinions to solve a problem or a situation or even give specific examples to illustrate their viewpoints.
All the contestants did really well. Nghiêm Vũ Ý Như has made the judges more impressed by her talent of dealing with a difficult situation. As a result, she becomes the winner of the contest with 258 points, Nguyễn Võ Minh Tú comes to the second position with 257 points, and Phạm Hồng Thái gets the third prize with 250 points. Congratulation to all contestants. They are really amazing, awesome, and outstanding.
